Found a water leak? Do this first.
A few quick steps limit the damage. Then call us: for leaks in Blackpool, Lytham St Annes, Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Poulton-le-Fylde and Kirkham and nearby, we can usually come out the same day.
Right now
- Keep away from electrics. If water is near sockets, lights or the fuse box, don’t touch them. If you can reach the fuse box safely, switch the electricity off at the main switch.
- Turn off the water at the stop tap. Turn it clockwise. It’s usually under the kitchen sink, but it can be in a downstairs toilet, the airing cupboard, the garage or under the stairs.
- Turn off the heating and hot water at the boiler or programmer, and switch off any immersion heater.
- Drain the pipes. Open the cold taps and flush the toilets to empty the water left in the system.
- Catch what you can with buckets and towels, and move your belongings out of the way.
- Call us on 07498 614173.
Ceiling bulging or sagging? Keep everyone out of the room below and don’t stand under it. Water can bring a ceiling down.
Find your stop tap today
Don’t wait for a leak. Find your stop tap now, check that it turns, and show everyone in the house where it is. If it’s stiff or won’t turn off fully, we can replace it.
In a flat, the stop tap may be inside the flat or in a shared area. Your landlord or managing agent can tell you where.
After the leak
- Take photos of the leak and the damage before anything is moved, for your insurer.
- Call your home insurer. Many policies cover finding the leak (sometimes called “trace and access”) as well as the damage.
- If you rent, tell your landlord or letting agent straight away.
- If water came through a light fitting or near electrics, have an electrician check them before you use them again.
- Let wet ceilings and walls dry out before anyone decorates. It can take several weeks.
Common questions
How quickly can you come out?
For leaks, we can usually come the same day. Call rather than using the form, so we can talk you through anything urgent.
I can’t find where the water is coming from.
Turn the water off at the stop tap anyway, then call us. We’ll find where it’s coming from.
Water is coming from the boiler.
Turn the boiler off at the switch next to it, turn off the water at the stop tap and call us. Don’t take the boiler’s cover off. See boiler problems for other boiler checks.
Is a dripping tap or a damp patch urgent?
It’s not an emergency, but don’t leave it: small leaks get bigger and cause damp. Send an enquiry and we’ll arrange a time.
